Martha Longenecker Pottery

Item: Martha Longenecker Ceramic Bowl or Platter

Artist/Designer: Martha Longenecker (1920-2013)

Description: A footed ceramic platter or shallow bowl by Martha Longenecker. Thrown on the wheel by Longenecker, this is a scarce example of her work. Longenecker was a significant potter, educator, and museum founder. A typically understated, earthy and practical but beautiful and elegant studio piece from the founder of Mingei International Museum. The proportions of this generous platter feel perfect. It is undated, but has the look of classic midcentury studio pottery and was probably made in the 1960s. Though many of her pieces went unsigned, this bears Martha Longenecker’s full signature and is marked Longenecker inside the foot underneath.
