  • Artist/Designer: John Grillo
  • Description: Gripping and mysterious painting by this highly accomplished and recognized American abstract expressionist painter. Crayon and Watercolor on paper. Signed and dated 1947. An early work, this piece was created during John Grillo's brief two years at the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco while taking classes with Elmer Bischoff, David Park, Hassel Smith, Jean Varda and Mark Rothko. Today, Grillo is acknowledged as perhaps the first and purest "Action Painter" on the West Coast, and one of the most influential painters of San Francisco's school of Abstract Expressionism. In the summer of 1947, Grillo left the Bay Area for New York to study with Hans Hofmann.

The last three images are scans from the exhibition catalogue "John Grillo: A Painter's Life of Expression - Works from 1938 to 2002" (by Susan Landauer and Robert A. Whyte), with a comprehensive Chronology, and select lists of Museum Collections, Solo and Group Exhibitions.
