Early and important, this catalog accompanied one of the
first major design exhibitions in America. It is loaded with images
and information reflecting Edgar Kaufmann Jr. and Alexander Girard’s
mission to inform the public of the merits of good design. Temporary
rooms designed and furnished by Alvar Aalto, Bruno Mathsson, Jens
Risom, Florence Knoll, Charles Eames, George Nelson and Van-Keppel
– Green are photographed along with pages of industrial design,
housewares, jewelry, ceramics, furniture, woven and printed fabrics,
lighting, glass and metalwork from the “hall of objects.”.

the major designers whose work is illustrated include: Eva Zeisel,
Maija Grotell, Alexander Girard, Ray Eames, William Armbruster,
Hvidt & Nielsen, Harry Weese, Kurt Versen, Isamu Noguchi, Allan
Adler, Harry Bertoia, Margaret De Patta, Robert Winston, Bernard
Rudofsky, Raymond Loewy, George Nelson, Pierre Jeaneret, Richard
Stein, Franco Albini, Abel Sorensen, Eero Saarinen, Hardoy, Bonet
and Kurcham.
Harry Bertoia
and Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley were included in this exhibition
while living in La Jolla, California.
