"Contemporary Candelabra" SOLD
- Artist/Designer:
Don Drumm (b. 1935) Ohio artist, studied at Kent State, BFA
& MA, and maintains a studio in Akron, Oh. Drumm was one of the
first to develop the use of cast aluminum as sculptural medium during
the late 1950s. The material’s resistance to the elements made
it ideal for outdoor sculpture which Drumm created on an architectural
scale for public and private commissions. Typically of an abstract
nature, his wall reliefs in aluminum, cast cement and sandblasted
brick and other public sculptures in steel were often very large,
up to 10 stories high! During the late 1960s and early 70s, Drumm
taught sculpture in Summer sessions at the Penland School of Crafts
in North Carolina, an important center for education in contemporary
crafts. He exhibited in the annual Ohio Artists and Craftsmen shows
at the Massillon Museum as well as countless regional and national
exhibitions and his work can be found all over the world.
- Description:
Cast aluminum candle
holder. This is a great example of Drumm’s efforts from the
mid-1960s which demonstrates his ability to seamlessly merge the utilitarian
object with stunning sculptural form. The textured surface of the
aluminum is accented by a black finish in low relief areas, and the
whole piece has developed a fantastic patina with age. The important
New York Gallery, America House (affiliated with the American Craftsmen’s
Council and the Museum of Contemporary Crafts) carried this “Contemporary
Candelabra” and it was published in Craft Horizons Magazine
in 1967. Stamped Don Drumm.
