Designer/Maker: Sydney Butchkes (1922) – A Kentucky native who studied at the Cincinatti Art Academy and the Art Students League in New York. Butchkes has participated in numerous major exhibitions in New York and nationally since the mid 1960s and his work can be found in private and public collections, such as, The Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The Newark Museum and The Sheldon Museum of Art in Nebraska.

Description: Early acrylic on shaped canvas diptych by New York-based artist and noted graphic designer Sydney Butchkes. Each part has canvas stretched taught over a complex frame. Signed, titled and dated 1967 on reverse along with a collection/accession label reading “gift of artist through Smithsonian Institution, Archives of American Art.” See photos for an image of the artist’s original design sketch.
