Description: Oil on canvas. Circa 1962, signed on reverse. Exhibited as part of Holle’s two-man show with his former Art Center colleague Sheldon Kirby at the Jefferson Gallery, La Jolla, 1965. Exhibited as part of Contemporary Art Wins A Beachhead: The La Jolla School of Arts 1960-1964, Oceanside Museum of Art, 2012.

From a series of paintings created between 1961 and 1963 while the artist taught at the Art Center in La Jolla. Of this series, Holle has said: “It was one of the more productive bodies of work that I had done up till then. It is the series that, up to this time, most seriously addressed my commitment to exploring subconscious reactions to the human condition and utilizing the paint, not simply as a raw material, but as an intrinsic substance involved with a vital final result …. devoid of attractive and contrived embellishments. The completed work would be the result of successive subconscious reactions to events occurring on the picture plane. In short, each attack would influence a reactive response. Completion was preferred over Finish.”
